Sailor dies during training at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown

YORKTOWN, Va. (WAVY) — A U.S. Navy Sailor died during a training exercise Sunday night at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown.

The Navy shared few details in a release on Monday, but said NWS Yorktown was conducting security boat training and familiarization on the York River at the time. The Sailor fell overboard around 8:05 p.m., and injuries sustained during that fall were fatal, the Navy said.

On Tuesday, Naval Weapons Station Yorktown identified the Sailor as 22-year-old Master at Arms Petty Officer Third Class Lyndon Joel Cosgriff-Flax.

There are no other details at this time, but the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Petty Officer Third Class Cosgriff-Flax was from Wichita, Kansas. He enlisted in the Navy in 2021 and reported for duty at NWS Yorktown in February 2022.
