NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Two boaters whose jon boat capsized on the Lafayette River in Norfolk were able to make it to shore safely, ending a roughly three-hour search on Monday morning, the Coast Guard says.

A Coast Guard spokesperson said just before 10:30 a.m. that they were able to get in touch with the boat’s owner, who’s now coordinating recovery of the vessel.

The jon boat was found in shallow water by a crabber in the vicinity of Day Beacon 24 in the Lafayette River around 7:15 a.m. after it capsized overnight. That’s in the Colonial Place neighborhood near Mayflower Road and Gosnold Ave.

Authorities found a life jacket, fishing poles, a gas tank and a pair of shoes in the water, prompting a search that included a MH60 Jayhawk helicopter from Elizabeth City.

It’s still unclear how the boat capsized at this time.
