SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A man is accused of pointing a gun at police when they tried to speak him at a Motel 6 Friday morning.

Dispatchers received a call around 9:45 a.m. from one of the hotel guest’s acquaintances. The caller told dispatchers the man was “acting strangely” and had a weapon.

When Suffolk police arrived at the scene on Pruden Boulevard, they say officers tried to speak with the man in question. The man pointed a gun at the officers and they retreated to secure the area.

A SWAT team and negotiators were called to the hotel to help peacefully resolve the situation.

Police say the man surrendered around 12:40 p.m. and was transported for a mental health evaluation.

There were no injuries reported from the incident. Officials have not said if the man has been charged.
