SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The 30-day warning period has gone into effect for red-light photo enforcement cameras that have been installed at Holland Road and Business Route 58, the city of Suffolk said Wednesday.
It said in this period, anyone caught violating red-light rules will receive a cautionary letter delivered to their residence, and beginning Aug. 2, offenders will be fined $50.
It said if you make a left or right turn at an intersection monitored by a red-light safety camera, there are a few things you should know:
- If a vehicle is completely in the intersection at the time the light turns red, you will not be issued a violation
- For a right turn, a red-light violation happens if the driver does not come to a complete stop behind the limit line before making a right turn
- For a right turn, drivers should only make the turn after coming to a full stop and making sure it is safe before turning
- For a right turn with a ‘No Turn On Red’ sign, a red-light violation happens when the driver completes the right turn at the intersection before the signal turns green for that direction
- For a left turn, a red-light violation takes place if the driver does not come to a complete stop behind the limit line when the controlling signal turns red
- Drivers should only go with the left turn when the signal changes to green and it is safe to do so

Suffolk is in its 30-day warning period for red-light cameras at Main Street and Constance Road. Starting July 21, drivers will incur a $50 fine for violations.
