SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Suffolk police are investigating after a 7-Eleven clerk was shot and killed on the job Friday morning.

According to police, the shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. Friday at the 7-Eleven located in the 800 block of Carolina Road, near Tyson Court and Horton Drive.

The business is in a relatively isolated area just north of Suffolk Executive Airport.

Two unknown subjects entered the 7-Eleven with handguns and started shooting at Ketron Exavier Smith, the store clerk.

Smith, 20-year-old man, sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced deceased on the scene.

At this time, police haven’t found any evidence indicating that this was a robbery attempt. No money or merchandise were taken from the store.

Police later released camera footage of the suspects during the incident.

No further information about the deadly shooting has been released at this time.

Neighbors to the store say it’s no stranger to crime.

“As far as I can remember I think it’s been robbed either between eight or nine or ten times,” neighbor Burton Chittum said, “I’ve lived here ever … for the last 35 years and I’ve seen it many times.”

He recalled one time when someone who had robbed the 7-Eleven ran to his neighborhood to hide.

“It got robbed one time and one of the fugitives ran up to the backdoor of this house right here and kicked it out, kicked the door out and then ran into the woods behind the 7-Eleven.”

He said he immediately checked his own backyard after hearing of Friday morning’s deadly shooting.

“The first thing I did this morning. I’m armed.”

I asked him if he thought any of the crime would stop anytime soon.

“After seeing it time and time again over the last 35 years I’ve been here, I don’t think it’ll stop because it’s so vulnerable out here by itself.”

He said it’s scary to see such tragedy happen so close to home.

“It’s come home, it’s not in other parts of the world anymore. It’s here in the United States it’s here in Virginia.”
