SURRY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) – The Surry County Animal Shelter is at full capacity and is asking the community for help

According to a Facebook post from Saturday from the Surry County Animal Shelter, the shelter is asking people to consider either adopting or fostering some of their animals.

Animal Services Superviser, Sergeant Daniel Fordham says the shelter currently have 23 dogs on site and 2 cats. The shelter is only designed to hold 24 dogs. They say many of the dogs were abandoned after hunting season, but some were just found wandering through the county.

Fordham listed a couple of the dogs who are currently available for adoption:

  • Millie: she is a 7-8-year-old tri colored beagle. She is very sweet and is looking for a cuddle partner. She has been with us since 3/9/2023. She is not spayed, but comes with a voucher for free spay through PET
  • Dot: she is a 2 to 3-year-old tri colored hound dog. Dot has been with us since 6/15/2022. She came in with another dog as a stray in the county. She is very playful and full of life. She is also spayed, microchipped, and rabies vaccinated.
  • Chase: he is a 1-2-year-old white and brown colored hound. He has been neutered, rabies vaccinated, and is ready for a home. Unfortunately, he is heartworm positive, and would need treatment very soon to prevent it from becoming chronic.
  • Boomer: Boomer is know as being the biggest sweetest dog you will meet. He is 2-3 years old, tri colored hound. He was abandoned in the county because he was not a good hunting dog. he has not been neutered, but will come with the voucher to complete through PETA. He is very loving and loves to sleep upside down
  • Bree: Bree is the dog that never stops smiling. She is a 3-4-year-old red tick coonhound. She was abandoned in the county with about 5 other dogs of her breed. She unfortunately does not have the ability to bark anymore, but loves to sit beside you and hang out. She has not been spayed yet, but comes with a voucher for PETA

The adoption fee at the shelter is $25 and they are currently working on list their available animals on Petfinder. All animals may be fostered before adoption if people need to make sure they are a good fit for them.

The Surry County Animal Shelter is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
