VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — If you’re a Virginian, you’ll likely be doing some shopping this weekend.

“Not having to pay taxes is a big plus because in these tough economic times more money you can keep in your pocket to spend on other things the better it is for you,” said Derek Staton of Taylor’s Do It Center in Norfolk.

Virginia’s tax-free weekend runs through Aug. 4. One category that qualifies for the tax-free savings — hurricane gear. This is a good time to stock up on items for the future.

“First thing is definitely a flashlight, got to have a flashlight make sure you have batteries, candles, tarps,” Staton said. “If you’re able to get it, we sell generators. That’s always a great thing if power goes out.”

Items like trash bags, and wood are good to add in too On the Oceanfront, some beachgoers said they don’t have a kit yet, but they’re watching the weather closely and making plans this weekend to pick up some necessary items.

“It’s beneficial to have those kits to stay safe,” said beachgoer Yarielis Diaz.

The tax-free weekend comes as the busiest part of hurricane season is just beginning.

“So I think it’s very important for everybody to stay safe and have the right tools to know what to do in that time,” beachgoer Tamia Sanders said.
