VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Young drivers in Virginia Beach face a higher risk for fatal crashes, based on data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The study conducted by Injury lawyers Bader Scott looked at the NHTSA data between 2017 and 2021.
“On a national scale, the study reveals a concerning trend: drivers in the 15-20 age group are overrepresented in fatal car crashes,” said Seth Bader, spokesperson for Bader Scott. “Of the 29,094 fatal crashes recorded over five years, 12,789 (44%) involved younger drivers. This statistic highlights the recklessness often associated with younger drivers.”
According to the findings, drivers between ages 15-20 had higher risk of fatal crashes in these cities:
- Denver, Colorado
- Arlington, Texas
- Omaha, Nebraska
- Columbus, Georgia
- Birmingham, Alabama
- Springfield, Missouri
- Virginia Beach, Virginia
- Milwaukee, Wisconsin
- Albuquerque, New Mexico
- Tulsa, Oklahoma
Denver ranked first with 56% and Virginia Beach ranks seventh on the list with 52% of all fatal crashes involving drivers aged 15-20.
