VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A $30 million center focusing of long-term care for veterans is heading to Virginia Beach.
The center was one of two 120-bed facilities announced by Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine in a press release Thursday. The other veterans home, which is projected to cost $31 million, will be in Vint Hill in Northern Virginia.
The funding for the projects was part of a $685 million package for state veterans homes across the U.S. included in the recent $1.3 million spending bill passed by Congress. Warner and Kaine had advocated strongly for the provision.
“Virginia’s veterans have made tremendous sacrifices to fight for our nation. Now, we need to fight for them and help ensure they have the resources they need to lead successful lives after they complete their service,” the Senators said in the release. “We are proud to have helped secure funding to improve veterans’ long-term care needs in Virginia, and we will continue to do all we can in the Senate to support veterans.”
Another veterans home is also in the process of being built in Virginia Beach. Ground was broken on the 128-bed Jones & Cabacoy Veterans Care Center back in November.
That’s being built on a 26-acre site next to a planned extension of Nimmo Parkway.
In other recent news regarding veteran care, local housing authorities just received funding to help homeless veterans thanks to a joint program between the Department of Housing and Urban Development and Department of Veterans Affairs.

Also, the Hampton Roads Veterans Employment Center, which had a cold opening back in January, just had its grand opening in early April. The center seeks to help servicemembers and their families with the transition from the military to the civilian job force.
