VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Elementary schools in Virginia Beach will have full-day kindergarten starting next year.
Virginia Beach City Public Schools said in a news release all but three of the district’s elementary schools will be making the switch from half-day classes.
John B. Dey, Hermitage and Thoroughgood, which are being impacted by construction, will add full-day kindergarten for the 2020-21 school year.
Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence said in a statement, “Full-day kindergarten is a game changer for these kids and I am beyond excited that my administration, working with this School Board and community, have to been able to provide this opportunity for them, for their parents and for our schools.”
The news release said parents of rising kindergarteners should expect to get information on school hours and schedules in the coming weeks.
The change-over will coincide with increased recess time for elementary schools. The district announced Thursday kindergarteners will get 20 more minutes of recess time when thenew school year starts.
