VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Officials say a 50-year-old man was rescued after his vessel overturned in the Chesapeake Bay Monday afternoon.
According to a tweet from Virginia Beach EMS Monday, the boater was wearing a PFD, or a personal floatation device, and was able to radio call for help.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the man’s 14-foot recreational vessel was overturned by severe weather about 1 mile north of the Lynnhaven entrance in the Chesapeake Bay on Monday.
He contacted watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Virginia Command Center around 1:15 p.m. to report his vessel had overturned.
Once on scene, the crew on a 45-foot Response Boat from Station Little Creek rescued the mariner from the overturned vessel.
He was taken to the shore and treated by emergency medical services and released.
The rescue included members of the U.S. Coast Guard with the help of VBEMS, VBPD, and VBFD.
“This rescue was successful in part due to the mariner being equipped with a VHF radio and a life jacket. It’s why we always ask that you leave prepared for the worst case scenario,” said Brian Badami, a watch stander at Sector Virginia Command Center. “We would like to also remind mariners to stay vigilant on checking issued weather advisories to ensure they go out in safe weather conditions.”
