Limiting visitors in Virginia ‘wouldn’t make much of a difference’ for business, hotel owner says

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A milestone was reached Monday at The Breakers Resort Inn.

For the first time in several weeks, Brad Capps said the 16th Street hotel took in a positive cash flow.

“We’ve lost over $100,000 already,” Capps, whose family owns the 60-room hotel, said Tuesday. “We’ve just been doing so many refunds.”

Businesses and restaurants that bring people to the vacation destination have been closed or only doing curbside/takeout service for nearly a month now.

For several weeks, the beaches have been only open to exercise and fishing.

However, unlike parts of North Carolina, Gov. Ralph Northam (D-Va.) has yet to put in any restrictions that would legally bar them from visiting the vacation destination, despite calls from some to do it.

People have called hotel and short-term rental owners greedy for still allowing out-of-town guests.

Capps would say anyone thinking that way will surely be disappointed.

“(Business is) pretty bad,” Capps said. “… I don’t think to say because we have been open it is making us survive. We’re just open.”
