VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – Operation Smile’s Interactive Learning Center is hosting a new event to highlight their impact in Sub-Saharan Africa on Wednesday.

The event, titled “South of the Sahara Showcase,” is set to take place on Wednesday, Jan. 24, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Operation Smile’s Global Headquarters located at 3641 Faculty Blvd. in Virginia Beach.

The interactive showcase aims to spotlight the medical contributions in Sub-Saharan Africa through immersive exhibits, traditional food and dance performances.

“We at Operation Smile believe in the power of connecting communities through shared stories and cultural experiences,” said Philip Odango, Senior Director, Community Engagement, Events and Partnerships at Operation Smile. “The Interactive Learning enter is not just a space for learning; it’s a platform for empathy and understanding. Events like the ‘South of Sahara Showcase’ are essential in bridging gaps and celebrating the diversity that enriches our global mission.”

South of the Sahara will be partnering with Tidewater African Cultural Alliance (TACA) and Culture Encounters (CE) to help celebrate cultural diversity. Multiple art performances are scheduled, including a panel discussion titled “Beyond Borders: Learning from Each Other’s Stories.”

Some panelists and speakers of the showcase include:

  • Dr. Amelia Ross-Hammond: Founder and chairman of Virginia African-American Cultural Center Inc. and Vriginia Beach City Council member
  • Terrance Afer-Anderson: President and CEO TerraVizion Entertainment Network
  • Amma Gatty: Founder and Executive Director, Culture Encounters
  • Dr. Charles Kabetu: Regional Medical Officer East Africa, Operation Smile
  • Dr. Augustino Heller: Regional Director East Africa, Operation Smile
  • Rita Addico Cohen: Founder and Executive Director, Tidewater African Cultural Alliance
