Former Redskins player gets suspended sentence in assault on ex-girlfriend

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A former Washington Redskins player convicted of unlawful wounding in connection to an attack on his ex-girlfriend will not serve any jail time.

65-year-old Curtis Jordan could have been given five years in prison.  The judge sentenced him to one year in jail with all of that time suspended.

Jordan was found guilty of unlawful wounding and not guilty of strangulation and larceny of a firearm of in May. He had faced up to five years in prison prior to Monday’s sentencing hearing.

“The final outcome has been given by the court,” said Jordan’s attorney Richard Doummar.  “We fully respect the judge’s decision and we are looking forward to moving on.”

Moving on has been difficult in the case against Jordan.

Jordan was convicted of beating his ex-girlfriend at her Virginia Beach home back in January 2015.

“This was hanging over his head for many years,” Doummar added.  “It has been extremely hard on him and embarrassing to him.”

Attorneys say the incident happened after Jordan’s ex-girlfriend slapped him. He then threw her to the ground and slammed her head into the floor.

“I was disappointed that he is not going to actively serve jail time because he really needs to,” said the victim’s attorney Stephen Smith.

The victim worked as an orthopedic surgeon before the incident. His attorney says she was left with a traumatic brain injury and is no longer able to work.

“He has been traveling enjoying his life while she has been here suffering,” Smith added.

The victim is still getting medical care of PTSD.

“It will be a long road for her while he goes on about his business,” Smith said.

Jordan told the court that he is sorry for his actions and said the judge would never see him in the courtroom again.

His attorney says just because he isn’t going to jail, it doesn’t mean he’s not being punished.

“At Mr. Jordan’s age, under these unfortunate circumstances, he will have to live with being a felon,” Doummar said.

The victim filed a federal civil suit against Jordan. The case has been settled for a sizable amount of money.
