VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Police say a Virginia Beach man was charged after a man was seriously injured in an auto-pedestrian crash Saturday afternoon.
The call came in at 4:50 p.m. for the incident in the area of 25th Street and Atlantic Avenue in Virginia Beach. Officers located the victim at the scene. He was taken to the hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries, police said.
The driver, 52-year-old Roy Abdias Escobar, remained at the scene, and was detained by police. He was later charged with maiming by vehicle and driving under the influence.
Police say the preliminary investigation showed Escobar was heading north on Atlantic Avenue when his vehicle ran off the right side of the road, struck a hotel sign and then hit the victim.
Police say the case remains under investigation and Escobar is being held at the Virginia Beach City Jail.
