VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – A Virginia Beach man must find a new place to live just one day after Thanksgiving.
According to reports, the call for the fire came in around 6:20 a.m. Friday in the 3000 block of Cape Henry Court.
The Cape Henry Villas board president Mike Willis tells 10 On Your Side someone was walking a dog, saw the fire and called 911.
When fire crews arrived, fire was seen coming from a condominium on the second floor.
Officials say a man was sleeping when the fire started and had to be rescued from the building.
Lulzim and Lionela Lolaj live in the unit below. The family says it was a scary sight.
“I saw them open the wood and climb up,” fifth-grader Lionela said. “They had to get him out because he has an injured knee.”
He was in good condition and refused to go to the hospital. The fire was under control within a few minutes and did not spread to any other units.
Lulzim Lolaj said it happened so fast.
“I was sleeping then I was starting to calculate what I need to take out with me. What I need to save if there is a fire coming down [into my unit]. But it didn’t happen,” said Lulzim.
Willis believes the fire was electrical since the properties have very strict rules, like no grills or propane tanks.
The unit is now condemned. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
