VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Rent is going up and big cities are taking the brunt of it. Virginia Beach has the second highest percent of rent increase in the U.S. metro cities, a new report states.

A report by Redfin, a real estate brokerage, determined that rent increased around 0.6% year to year in September to around $1,634. Several East Coast and Midwestern metro areas had the largest percent increase.

At the No. 1 spot for percent rent increase is Washington D.C. at a 12% increase. The average rent sitting at $2,088. Meanwhile, Virginia Beach takes the No. 2 spot with an increase in rent of 11.3% at $1,625.

The city seeing the largest decrease in rent is Jacksonville, Florida, at a decrease of 11.3% with $1,485.
