VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A man accused of murdering a young father in Virginia Beach in mid-February was caught in California.

U.S. Marshals said a task force in El Centro, California — in the southern part of the state — arrested 30-year-old Andre’Jeru Bernard Bigby in a remote desert area known as Slab City. Bigby was found hiding in a tent. 

The 30-year-old is faced with a murder charge in the shooting death of 19-year-old Jayln Harris.

According to Virginia Beach police, Harris was shot and killed at the Oceanfront on Feb. 13. Family told 10 On Your Side Harris had graduated from Landstown High School and had a 4-month-old baby girl.

“He was a very good boy,” Dennis Bly, Harris’ stepfather, said. “He wasn’t in no gangs or nothing like that.”

Bigby was being held at a California jail before being extradited to Virginia.

Virginia Beach police arrested another suspect, 33-year-old Henry Smith III, on Feb. 16 and charged him with accessory after the fact
