VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center is looking a bit full.
On Monday, the shelter took in more than 150 rabbits, the facility posted on Facebook.
According to the Virginia Beach Animal Control, they were called to a home animal control officers have previously responded to regarding assisting a resident with her rabbits.
However, this time, officers say the rabbit problem had worsened and the number of rabbits had increased to an “overwhelming amount” according to the VB Animal Control.
The rabbits aren’t available yet, but will be able to go to new homes once they’re medically cleared and spayed or neutered.
The shelter is hoping to start lining up some homes now. The rabbits appear to be mixed breeds.
Rabbits have a very short gestation period (pregnancy) of 28-35 days. Officials say this is why the veterinarian staff are working hard to spay and neuter them before they are adopted.

The shelter is also asking residents for donations to help keep the rabbits in great shape. The facility is asking for resources and materials such as ceramic rocks, leafy green veggies, rabbit toys and grass hay among others.
