VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A 34-year-old man was sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend.
Jamel Isaiah Thorogood of Virginia Beach plead guilty to charges of first degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a nonviolent felon within 10 years.
Court documents show that on Aug. 17, 2021, Thorogood began repeatedly calling and texting is ex-girlfriend because he was upset about her new relationship with Marquise Alston.
After making a series of threats, Thorogood went to the the apartment on Elm Court Grove where his ex-girlfriend and Alston lived.
His ex-girlfriend wasn’t home, however Alston was there with the children, including a child that Thorogood has with his ex-girlfriend.
Just before 6:30 p.m., Thorogood walked into the apartment and found Alston lying in bed. Thorogood shot Alston five times in the neck and arms, killing him.
Before running away, Thorogood told the children, “Don’t tell nobody.”
The children went to a neighbor’s apartment and called police. A couple of days later, Thorogood was arrested in Oxford, North Carolina and was later extradited back to Virginia.
Thorogood was previously convicted for possession with intent to distribute marijuana more than half an Ounce but Less than five pounds and concealed weapon.
In accordance with a plea agreement, Circuit Court Judge Afshin Farashahi sentenced Thorogood to 50 years in prison with 25 years suspended.
