RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) — The Virginia Cannabis Control Authority (CCA) has chosen Metrc to run its new seed-to-sale tracking program for the Virginia medical cannabis industry.
Starting in the summer of 2025, all medical cannabis pharmaceutical processors will be required to use the new system to track cannabis through its growth cycle and production to its sale.
The goal of the tracking program is to help increase consumer protection through enforcement and transparency. It will allow CCA to quickly manage product recalls and prevent cannabis from being diverted outside the regulated system. It will also block untested, illicit cannabis from entering the market.
“The new seed-to-sale system will enhance our ability to regulate the medical cannabis market and protect consumers,” said Jeremy Preiss, Acting Head and Chief Officer of Regulatory, Policy, and External Affairs for the CCA. “We are pleased to partner with Metrc, which has an established track record for timely implementation of seed-to-sale solutions in other states. This system will enhance the security and safety of the Commonwealth’s medical cannabis program.”
Additionally, the system will provide CCA with real-time data that allows for deeper insights into Virginia’s medical cannabis market and consumption trends.
