VMRC: Body found near Factory Point confirmed as man who fell overboard in Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — The body found off of Factory Point and Grandview Beach on Saturday has been confirmed as the man who fell off of his boat while going after a fishing net, according to the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC).

The VMRC confirmed on Monday that 58-year-old Keith Thomas Henley of Providence Forge, who fell overboard while fishing on Thursday, July 11, was the body found near Factory Point on Saturday.

In light of Henley’s death, the Coast Guard is urging for people to know the forecast for the day before going out on the water, and that flotation devices are essential and should be thrown in the water immediately after someone falls in.

10 On Your Side’s Andy Fox asked Zach Widgeon with the VMRC about what happened on that fateful day.

“The net went overboard,” Widgeon said. “He went to get it. He had a friend on the boat with him. His friend was inexperienced, didn’t know how to operate the boat, couldn’t even turn it on to go get him. Had basically just watched him disappear. The friend called 911 and Hampton Fire and Rescue sent a marine unit out. One of the captains of the other vessels for the Hampton Fire Rescue got on the boat and drove the boat in.”
