PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia State Police are investigating two fatal crashes on Saturday, police said.
Around 2:30 p.m., state police responded to a single-vehicle crash on Guards Shore Road, in the Bloxom area of the Eastern Shore.
Investigations revealed that the driver of a 2014 Chevrolet Cruz sedan, 26-year-old Radain Alberto Tomas Isidro, was traveling eastbound on Guards Shore Road when he ran off the roadway and overturned into the marsh area alongside of the roadway.
The vehicle rolled over into the marsh area, with approximately 4ft of water, submerging the passenger compartment completely. A 25-year-old woman was able to escape the vehicle with minor injuries. The driver, Isidro, was unable to escape from the vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
There are no indications that speed was a contributing factor, and currently unknown if alcohol was a contributing factor.
The second crash occurred on Saturday night around 8:30 p.m. on I-85 in Brunswick County.
A Nissan Armada ran off the road and hit several before turning over. The driver, 51-year-old James Courtney Hughes, of Danville, Virginia died upon impact. At this time, police do not know if alcohol was involved. However, speed is suspected to have been a factor in this crash.
