Over 115 million people are expected to travel 50 miles or more from their home from Saturday, throughout the 10-day holiday period, which runs Dec. 23 to Monday, Jan. 1, according to AAA.

  • Wear a mask. It helps reduce your risk.
  • Get your immunizations.
  • Stay home if your sick.
  • Be careful around vulnerable groups.
  • Wash your hands, or keep an alcohol-based cleanser around.

Be careful of toxic exposures

The Virginia Poison Center advises the community to be careful with generators, space heaters and chemicals.

Follow these safety tips:

  • Keep the generator outside because the exhaust contains carbon monoxide.
  • Fuel for generators and space heaters like kerosene or gasoline need to be in secure containers and out of reach of children.
  • Do not put fuel or antifreeze in unmarked containers. It can be confused with common beverages.
