3-vehicle crash on Route 17 in York results in fatality

YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — An 84-year-old Yorktown man died following a multi-vehicle crash Friday morning.

Virginia State Police said the crash occurred around 7:25 a.m. on Route 17, north of Fort Eustis Boulevard in York. It involved three vehicles.

A preliminary investigation determined 84-year-old William Adams was attempting to exit the McDonald’s onto southbound Route 17, when his vehicle entered the path of an oncoming pickup truck. The vehicles collided. The impact caused Mr. Adams’ car to cross over the southbound lanes into the northbound lanes, where it was involved in a crash with another vehicle.

Adams was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries.

The driver of the pickup truck also went to the hospital, to be treated for non life-threatening injuries and the driver of the third vehicle was not injured, state police said.

VSP said no charges have been filed.

Around 12:20 p.m. Thursday, the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office provided an update that the northbound lanes of Route 17 had reopened to traffic.
