Update: The child’s mother was also charged with child abuse. Authorities were still searching for Canaan Lamont Fleming as of Thursday, March 24.


YORKTOWN, Va. (WAVY) — A 3-year-old was injured in a shooting Wednesday morning in York County.

In an update Wednesday evening, authorities said 22-year-old Canaan Lamont Fleming, who lives at the residence where the shooting took place, is wanted on several felony charges.

He’s charged with shooting into an occupied dwelling, maiming, two counts of child abuse, and reckless handling of a firearm.

Police say the child was brought by their family to Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News around 3 a.m. on Wednesday. When officers arrived at the hospital, they learned the child was shot in an apartment in the 7000 block of George Washington Memorial Highway.

The sheriff’s office confirmed deputies were working a crime scene at an apartment at the Public Storage facility right off the highway. At the apartment, officers found a gun.

Wednesday afternoon, deputies were still investigating the Public Storage facility. They appeared to be processing a tan Honda SUV for evidence.

A sheriff’s office spokesperson told 10 On Your Side that the child did not shoot themself, but it is believed to be an accidental shooting. 

The investigation is ongoing.
