YORK COUNTY Va. (WAVY) — An employee at a 7-Eleven in York County was shot during an attempted robbery late Wednesday night.
Officials with the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office say they were notified at 10:08 p.m. for the incident in the 8600 block of George Washington Memorial Highway. Police say two people attempted to rob the 7-Eleven and shot a male employee.
The man was transported to a local hospital.
The sheriff’s office said there may have been witnesses to the shooting or other people in the area that they’d like to hear from.
The sheriff’s office is asking Edgehill residents to check their cameras for suspicious activity between 9:45 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. Wednesday night.
“It’s important to make sure this type of crime doesn’t continue to occur, so if anybody has any information please come forward,” said Capt. Thomas West, captain of the Criminal Investigation Division in the York County Sheriff’s Office.
West said the incident was captured on the store’s camera and the video shows two people covered from head to toe — with hooded sweatshirts, masks, and gloves — go into the 7-Eleven.
He said one of them appeared to be the lookout, and the other person had a handgun and demanded money from the clerk.
West said that’s when a 40-year-old man, who also worked there, verbally confronted the person with the gun. Shortly after, he shot him.
West said they aren’t sure exactly how many times he was shot, but at least twice.
He said the victim had to have an invasive surgery so they haven’t been able to speak more with him yet.
He also said it’s still not clear how much money was stolen, if any.
“We’re working with other jurisdictions currently to determine if this is related to any other robberies that have occurred,” West said.
West said the store video shows multiple witnesses inside when the shooting happened but they ran out. If that was you — they’d like a call.
“It’s very alarming that during the course of a theft or robbery that the suspect would actually use that level of force against an employee or a citizen, this a serious offense. We’re taking it very seriously,” stated West.
