HAMPTON, Va (WAVY) — After a combined 17 decades of life, one Hampton couple may have had the most love-filled Valentine’s Day yet.
Lawrence and Lilly Patterson, 91 and 82 respectively, didn’t go out to eat Thursday night or exchange any extravagant gifts. Rather they ate with one of their sons.
“It’s not all about material things you know, it’s about how God brought us out of that fire,” said Lilly.
A fire ripped through their home in the 400 block of Algonquin Road around 6:30 a.m. February 6. By the time firefighters extinguished the flames, the home was a total loss.
“I was lucky we got out there,” said Lawrence, who had lived at the home for 51 years.
The couple lost everything: clothes, decades of pictures and other family keepsakes. However that is not what the two choose to focus on.
“I got Jesus, me and my husband. That’s a blessing right there,” Lilly said. “As long as we got each other has Jesus got each other thats the main thing.”
The two have not yet decided where they will live next.
