NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Nicki Bibbs, a former navy wife, survived some rough seas in her life, but it was a collision at the busy intersection of Granby Street and Louisiana Drive in Norfolk that would lead to her death.
The Norfolk Police Forensic team remained at Tuesday’s crash site for several hours while they reconstructed the accident that loved ones say left Bibbs brain dead. Bibbs was riding her bike when she was hit by a vehicle in the Wards Corner section of Norfolk.
Loved ones said they made the difficult decision to take her off of life support at 9:12 p.m. on June 12.
This was the second tragedy for the Bibbs family. On April 17, 2022, Bibbs’ son-in-law, 32-year-old Alex Meade, was shot and killed in Daytona Drive in Virginia Beach.
His wife was Bibbs’ daughter, Kerri Ann, who drove to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital from her home in Delaware to bid farewell to her mother. While the case remains under investigation, loved ones are asking drivers to look out for others on the road.
Her best friend, Christine Walker, said that people should be mindful when they are driving, especially in that intersection where there’s a school not too far as well as elderly folks in the area.
“People should be very mindful of their surroundings when they’re behind the wheel,” Walker said. “A car is very dangerous.”
This was the second incident of a pedestrian being hit in Norfolk on Tuesday. Hours before the Wards Corner crash, a pedestrian was hit in the nearby 2900 block of East Little Creek Road. A 69-year-old woman was charged with driving under the influence in that incident, and police told 10 On Your Side that victim had life-threatening injuries.
Nicki Bibbs’ daughter set up a GoFundMe to help with funeral arrangements. The link to donate can be found here.
