PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A man who was convicted in a 2017 Portsmouth murder is facing 23 years in prison.
Franklin Layne III was sentenced Thursday to 20 years for murder, and an additional three years for a firearm charge. A jury found him guilty earlier this year of shooting and killing 70-year-old John Nunamaker.
The fatal incident happened at the house of Nunamaker’s estranged wife, Jaye.
During a hearing last August, prosecutors played security camera video that showed Layne shooting Nunamaker. Layne was at her house that night — and the two were watching TV when John showed up to the house, violating a protective order.
The video showed Layne going out of the house, and pointing Jaye’s gun at John. The two pushed each and argued before Layne pulled the trigger.
Layne was convicted in another murder back in the 1980s, and was released on parole after 25 years.
