NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A man convicted in a deadly 2016 shooting in Newport News is facing nearly three decades in prison. 

Monte Stokes was sentenced to 28 years on Friday for the shooting death of 51-year-old Eduardo Hernandez Amezcua.

Newport News police found Amezcua shot at the intersection of 31st Street and West Avenue.

Stokes was found guilty of charges including first-degree murder during a jury trial in December.
