VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia State Police say a man died in a crash late Thursday night after leading troopers on a high-speed chase through two cities.

According to state police, it all started when troopers ran the license plate of a stolen Mercedes-Benz on Northampton Boulevard, near Interstate 64. 

When the trooper tried to pull over the driver, he did not stop, and took off down Northampton into Virginia Beach. State police say he reached speeds up to 100 mph.

When he reached the on-ramp to Shore Drive, he lost control, ran off the road and slammed into a concrete barrier. State police the driver died on the scene.

Troopers say the man did not have any ID. He was found in possession of  a stolen gun out of North Carolina as well as illegal narcotics.

State police say they are working to identify the man.
