NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Virginia State Police are investigating an early morning accident that resulted in a fatality.
State Police say 27-year-old Frederick Lamar Johnson, Jr., of Newport News, died when the vehicle he was driving struck a jersey wall.
Johnson was traveling southbound on I-664 in a 2019 Hyundai Sonata when he lost control of the vehicle while taking the exit ramp fly over to 26th/27th street.
Upon impact, the vehicle flipped over the jersey wall and landed in the northbound lanes of I-664.
Mr. Johnson Jr., was transported to Riverside Regional Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
State Police say speed was a factor and that Johnson was wearing his safety belt.
