PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Portsmouth police are investigating an overnight shooting that left a man dead.
Police officials say the shooting happened around 12:42 a.m. in the 100 block of Cavalier Blvd., near Deep Creek Blvd.
Investigators say the man suffered a life-threatening gunshot wound to the upper body. Paramedics took him to a local hospital, where he later died.
Police identified the man as 25-year-old Malcolm J. Hoskins.
Hoskins’ family say he had gone out on the porch to call his girlfriend when he was shot.
“He wasn’t no bad guy. He didn’t sell drugs, high school graduate, college education,” said Hoskins’ relative who did not want to be identified.
Police returned to the scene Monday afternoon for a RESET walk to talk with neighbors about the traumatizing incident.
Relatives believe they know what the motive behind the shooting was and that Hoskins was not the intended target but another family member was.
He was just released out of jail on Friday after serving a year, according to family members.
“He lost his life for nothing. He didn’t know what it was like to live out here for real,” his relative said.
Hoskins was a twin and getting ready to celebrate his 26th birthday at the end of the month when he lost his life.
His family says he wanted to work on cars and open a garage, something they’ll do in honor of him.
“He didn’t have any kids. He wasn’t in any street gangs. He was a mechanic. That’s all he wanted to do was work on cars,” his family says.
They’re asking for anyone with information to tell police so they can get justice.
They’ve also setup a GoFundMe account to pay for his funeral, since his death was unexpected.
