PAMLICO COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — The United States Coast Guard has suspended its search for two missing mariners after their boat sank Tuesday night in the area of the Pamlico Sound.

“At this point, we’ve decided to suspend further search efforts for the two missing mariners, pending further information,” said Rear Adm. Keith Smith, commander of the Fifth Coast Guard District, on Thursday. “Our thoughts are with the families and we are very grateful to the master of the vessel, whose EPIRB saved the life of the survivor.”

Two others were pulled from the water Tuesday night after the Coast Guard received a distress signal from their fishing vessel, Papa’s Girl.

Both were hypothermic and taken to Sentara Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City for treatment. One required CPR, and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Several resources from the Coast Guard’s Elizabeth City, Hatteras Inlet and Oregon Inlet stations were involved in the search, as well as the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission and North Carolina Marine Patrol. A good Samaritan vessel, the Aubrey Niel, also assisted.
