NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — An occasional ride, a mechanic who can fix their car — those are the some of the less obvious, but not less important needs for James Moore and his wife, Brenda.
Moore, 70, was rocked about a year ago by his diagnosis of Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Worse yet, it was inoperable and it had already begun spreading to his bones.
10 On Your Side had helped Moore get coverage from the VA for hernia surgery four years ago when it had to be done on an emergency basis at DePaul Medical Center. But this latest diagnosis was something entirely different
“It was a shock to me,” James Moore said.
“It floored us,” Brenda Moore said. “He takes about 15 medicines a day.”
They are hoping someone can help get James Moore to his appointments. They have a car, but it broke down and needs work. If someone could fix it for them, Brenda could drive him to the Hampton Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
And in this time of government cutbacks, both are concerned about the already strained caseload at the hospital.
“The vets are already not getting the quality care they need, and now it’s going to make it harder with him,” Brenda Moore said. “Unfortunately, his cancer was not caught in time.”
The Moores are looking for someone to fix their car, or in the meantime, provide transportation for James’s medical appointments. If you think you can help, contact 10 On Your Side at reportit@wavy.com.
