PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The National Hurricane Center (NHC) says Beryl has strengthened into the first hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic season.

The center said in its 5 a.m. update Friday that the storm has maximum sustained winds of 75 mph with higher gusts and was moving west at 14 mph. It is located 1140 miles east southeast of the Lesser Antilles.

No coastal warnings or watches were issued, and the center said the system was expected to dissipate and become an an open trough east of the Lesser Antilles late Sunday or Monday.

On Saturday, NHC officials downgraded Beryl to a Tropical Storm.
