Former Chesapeake police officer among local suspects in massive Iowa drug bust

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A massive drug bust out of Iowa that netted nearly $3 million in marijuana has ties to Hampton Roads.

One of the three suspects from the area even served as a police officer.

Elwood Perry Jr., 44, worked for the Chesapeake Police Department for 11 years.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office arrested Perry, 65-year-old Richard Jordan, of Elizabeth City, and 45-year-old Patrick Hawes, of Norfolk, on Friday.

Deputies initially stopped the men’s RV for several moving violations.

A K9 alerted deputies of the drugs, which weighed in at 300 pounds and had an estimated street value of $2.8 million.

All three men were charged with possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver more 100 kilograms, a Class B felony.

A City of Chesapeake spokesman confirmed Perry worked for the police department from January 2000 until April 2011.

10 On Your Side visited an address on file for him, and although he doesn’t live there now, a former neighbor said she’s shocked to find out about his arrest.
