MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WREG) — A man allegedly shot himself in the neck while trying to steal a car from a car dealership in Tennessee on Friday.
Joshua Garvins, 26, was charged with aggravated robbery following the incident at Champion Auto Sales in Memphis. An employee at the dealership was trying to sell a vehicle to Garvins and took him on a test drive, according to court documents.
The employee told police he felt uneasy because Garvins was “acting peculiar.”
Police said as the employee got out of the car, Garvins demanded the keys. When the employee refused to hand them over, Garvins allegedly threatened to kill him, according to authorities.
The two got into a physical altercation, during which the suspect pulled out a gun, police said.
Witnesses told police the two wrestled over control of the gun, and that’s when shots rang out.
An arrest report states that a bullet hit Garvins in the neck, and he ran off. But he didn’t get far.
Garvins was quickly taken into custody by the Memphis Police Department. A mugshot appears to show Garvins with a bandage on his neck.
As for the employee, he told Nexstar’s WREG that he wasn’t injured and is just trying to move forward from the situation.
Garvins is set to appear in court on Monday at 9 a.m.
