WASHINGTON (WAVY) — A site has been approved for a memorial along the National Mall in honor of those who served in operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

For almost two years, organizers with the National Desert Storm War Memorial Association have been working with an architects on a spiral-shaped design for the memorial

Now the board of directors is raising money to build the memorial.

Although the government donated the land, no taxpayer money will pay for the memorial.

Organizers say the memorial is meant to honor those who served in the operations, as well as to educate the public. Desert Shield and Desert Storm refer to two phases of the Gulf War, which happened between 1990 and 1991.
