KANSAS CITY, Mo. (WDAF) – Two juveniles have been charged in Wednesday’s shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl rally, and more charges are expected.
Jackson County family court says the Office of the Juvenile Officer filed charges against two juveniles Friday.
The court says the suspects are currently at the Juvenile Detention Center on gun-related and resisting arrest charges. The court’s office said in a news release that the charges were filed Thursday and more charges are expected as Kansas City police continue to investigate.
It is unknown at this time when the juveniles are due in court. The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office told Nexstar’s WDAF on Thursday that the juveniles will be charged as adults if and when they are certified to stand trial as adults. They have not been identified, nor have their ages been given.
The prosecutor’s office issued this statement minutes after the charges were announced:
“We regularly work with juvenile court officers on cases and we have worked with them on this case as well. Though we do not oversee or supervise the juvenile officers, we work closely with them. We expect to be at future hearings regarding theses individuals who were charged today in Family Court. We will continue to work closely with all authorities as the investigation continues. We are grateful for the collaboration and partnership with these juvenile officers.
And we will continue to work closely with the police investigative team overseeing their investigation of this mass shooting.
We plan to have no further comment today.”
The charges come after 23 people were shot at the conclusion of the Super Bowl rally Wednesday, leaving one woman dead.
Police Chief Stacey Graves said a dispute between several people led to the shooting. She stressed a preliminary investigation shows no connection to terrorism or homegrown violent extremism.
On Thursday, police confirmed 43-year-old Elizabeth “Lisa” Lopez-Galvan was killed in the shooting. She was a DJ and host of Taste of Tejano at local radio station KKFI.
“Our hearts and prayers are with her family,” the station wrote on Facebook. “This senseless act has taken a beautiful person from her family and this KC Community.”
The 23 shooting victims ranged in age from 8 to 47, and over half of them were under the age of 16, police said.
