(KTLA) — A woman said she escaped her kidnapper after being held captive in Adelanto, California, for almost a week, and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department (SBSD) is looking for the captor.

The woman, whose name has not been released, flagged down help at 7:50 p.m. Monday, deputies said in a news release.

She told deputies she had met a man named Tom in Los Angeles on March 12 and “came willingly with him to Adelanto,” the release said.

Once she was in San Bernardino County, the woman was not allowed to leave for six days “until she was finally able to escape and flag down help,” the SBSD said. A search of the area did not turn up Tom, the crime scene or evidence, deputies added.

The woman was taken to a hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities said Tom is believed to be 30 to 40 years old, about 6 feet tall and 300 pounds. He is white or Hispanic, they said, “with a shaved head and dark-colored goatee.” They added he has no prominent tattoos, scars or markings. He was last spotted driving a dark-colored four-door SUV.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective A. Pangburn at 760-552-6800.
