OUTER BANKS, N.C. (WAVY) — There’s now an official opening date for the new span of roadway from north to south over the Oregon Inlet.
The ribbon cutting for the new 2.8 mile long, 90-foot high Bonner Bridge in Dare County will be April 2.
The new bridge runs parallel to the current one, but it’s higher and longer and has a 100-year life span.
“It’s a lot safer for sure, a lot safer, because that one’s been needing repairs and work for a long time so it’s a good addition,” said Todd Parks.

Last weekend, more than a thousand people got the chance to walk and bike on the bridge before it’s only used for cars.
Officials say part of the original Bonner Bridge will stay in place for pedestrians while other parts that are demolished will be added to offshore reef sites.
