NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – A shipbuilder at the Newport News shipyard has died after falling while at work.

According to a spokesperson for Huntington Ingalls, James Goins, a master shipbuilder and sheet metal specialist, was injured during a fall on December 13. He died from his injuries on January 3.

The shipyard said it is providing support for his family.

In an email, shipyard manager Duane Bourne, said, “Our priority has been Mr. Goins’ care following his injury, and his family – providing them support, while respecting their privacy. We have also been focused on understanding how this accident occurred and preventing it from happening again.”

OSHA, the government agency that oversees workplace safety, is investigating what happened.
