NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A Newport News inmate who deputies say attempted suicide earlier this week has died, according to the Newport News Sheriff’s Office.
In a press release, deputies say jail personnel found Alfred Raymond Lattanzio, 42, around 2:30 p.m. Monday hanging in his cell. Medical attention was immediately given, deputies say, and Lattanzio was taken to the hospital. He was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon.
Lattanzio, of Hampton, was charged with first-degree murder in connecton to a fatal shooting at a Motel 6 on J. Clyde Morris Blvd. on March 29. The victim was identified as 61-year-old Randall Edward Dotson, of Newport News.
The sheriff’s office says two investigations, one internal by the sheriff’s office, and another by the Newport News Police Department, are being conducted per standard procedure.
