YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — Living right off of I-64 gives you the convenience to hop on and off the highway easily.
But it also leaves some neighbors with an inconvenience, lots of noise.
“We have to sleep with the TV on and the noise machine,” said neighbor Amy Wright.
“I work late, so when I come home late at night sometimes, I can’t sleep because of the noise, especially when the big trucks are passing by,” said neighbor Isaiah Kissoon.
Kissoon brought us in his backyard to show us just how loud it gets.
“They all complain about it, the noise, and a matter of fact there’s a few people who came here to rent houses on this block and to buy houses and because of the noise they said no they don’t want it,” Kissoon said.
Neighbors were worried I-64’s expansion would bring even more noise.
The third phase of expansion is beginning, and will widen the road from the Lightfoot exit in York County to Humelsine and Marquis Center Parkway.
VDOT says with the expansion they did a preliminary noise study that shows three noise barrier walls would be justified to be built in that area on the eastbound side.
They would extend in different segments and begin on the bridge over Queens Creek and continue to the east beyond the bridges over Colonial Parkway and Lakeshead Drive.
Recently VDOT also did a final analysis and found two more barrier walls could be warranted on the westbound side.
These could extend from the bridge over Queens Creek to west of the bridge over Lakeshead Drive.
Neighbors welcome the idea.
“It would be amazing, I could actually have people over and sit in my backyard,” Wright said.
“It would bring more value to my house, more quiet to my house when I come home,” Kissoon said.
