Nordstrom to close MacArthur Center store in April

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Another store at Norfolk’s MacArthur Center is set to close — and it’s a big one.

10 On Your Side obtained a copy of a letter to Nordstrom employees, which says the store will close at the end of the day on Friday, April 5.

“Looking at the needs in these markets and the investments needed to sustain these stores, we decided it made the most sense to close these stores and focus on other ways we can best serve our customers, including nearby Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack stores as well as online,” said Jamie Nordstrom, president of Nordstrom stores.

There is a Nordstrom Rack at Pembroke Mall in Virginia Beach.

A spokesperson for MacArthur Center told 10 On Your Side they were informed by the city of Nordstrom’s decision to vacate its lease.

The downtown corner Nordstrom has occupied for 20 years is public property. This means the city, and not MacArthur Center or Starwood Retail Properties, gets to decide what is next for the space.

Norfolk officials say they are disppointed by Nordstrom leaving, but not surprised. Officials say they are excited about numerous possibilities for the future of the downtown space, although it’s too early to specify what those possibilities might be.

The closure will impact 85 employees at the downtown Norfolk store, according to the company.

Nordstom also announced Wednesday that it is closing its store in Wellington, Florida.

Nordstrom is the latest store with an announced closure at MacArthur, joining Williams-Sonoma, Pottery BarnAveda and Yankee Candle.
