NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Chris DePalma lives just around the corner from the intersection of Newport Ave. and W Little Creek Road, where two people were hit by cars earlier this week.

He’s also the second vice president for the Wards Corner Civic League, and knows just how dangerous this intersection has become.

“I only live like three houses down and one block in, so I’m constantly always hearing screeches when people stop short,” said DePalma.

Michael Dole’s home sits right at the intersection.

He says one of the biggest issues is speed.

“You can tell most of these people are doing more than 35 — they’re flying just to get through that light,” said Dole.

DePalma says the dangers of this intersection will most likely be a hot topic at this month’s civic league meeting.

He says he would like to see the city reduce the speed on West Little Creek Road, even if it’s just by a little.

“I think a good measure would be to lower the speed limit to 30 miles an hour. I think even reducing it 5 miles per hour certainly would help,” DePalma said.

10 On Your Side did speak with area council member Martin Thomas Jr. about these concerns and what neighbors can do.

He says he’ll be at the next civic league meeting, and if neighbors want to file an official request to lower the speed limit, he’ll take it to traffic engineers who can then come back with recommendations.

If any concerned neighbors want to attend the next community meeting, it will be held April 16 at the Norfolk Fitness and Wellness Center.
