Norfolk restaurant Dog-N-Burger sees crowds out the door on final day in business

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — After 50 years in business, the popular Ghent-area restaurant Dog-N-Burger closed Wednesday.

Dog-N-Burger owner Jerry Meltsner said last week the right time for him to step away. A barbecue restaurant called “Redwood Smoke Shack” is set to take over the location and could open by mid-May.

Residents flocked Dog-N-Burger in droves after news of its closure broke last week.

There was a similar sight at the restaurant on Wednesday. Images from WAVY’s Laura Caso showed a line of customers that stretched out the door and down the block.

The popular restaurant’s food will still live on at No Frill Bar and Grill, which is owned by Meltsner. No Frill said on its Facebook page Thursday morning it is now serving a “Dog N Burger” combo.
