NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY)- The Norfolk Sheriff’s Office said scammers are targeting people in a new jury duty scam. Deputies said three people reported receiving the bogus calls March 6 from somoene who said they worked as a major with the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office.
One caller complained the caller threatened to arrest him or her and demanded $3,000 in gift cards for failure to show up for federal jury duty. The complainant reported the person calling even used the name of a real sheriff’s office major and real phone number.
Sheriff’s office representatives said this is a scam and the agency never falls jurors or asks for money by phone. All notices from the sheriff’s office are served in person or through regular mail.
